The transition from kindergarten to first grade is the biggest leap for a child. In kindergarten, your child was surrounded by a few kids, but from now onwards he will be with a number of students. Here your child will learn new things, play with several kids, eat, play with others and his routine will entirely change.

Here in this article, let us understand how to prepare your child for first grade. 

Things your child should learn before entering First Grade

Till the age of 5 or 6 your kids should have little reading skills before entering first Grade, So let us understand what all reading skills your kid should have:

  1. Recognize upper & lower case.
  2. Recognize and read numbers from 1 to 100
  3. Know the alphabet and basic features of letters and words.
  4. Memorize 100 or 150 spellings.
  5. Rhyming words.
  6. Read a parah of 100 words in one go.

What all your child should write before entering First Grade?

  1. Write upper & lower case alphabets.
  2. Write & understand their and their family member’s name.
  3. Understand basic shapes and letters.
  4. Create simple 4 or 5 words sentences.

Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our hands and wrists. At the age of 5 & 6 your child should be prepared to do a few motor skills such as mentioned below:

  1. Hold a pencil, crayon, pen, scale in a correct way.
  2. Hold scissors in the right way.
  3. Able to cut with pieces of paper easily with scissors.
  4. Hold toothbrush and spoon easily.
  5. Brush their teeth easily.
  6. Pick their dishes after eating.
  1. Recognize Addition (+) & Subtraction (-) sign.
  2. Add & Subtract numbers from 1 to 10.
  3. Draw pictures to understand addition & subtraction.
  4. Count a little amount of money.
  5. Know numbers from 1 to 50.
  6. Understand shapes such as circle, square, rectangle, star, triangle, etc.
  7. Able to see the time on the clock.

Here you can give basic ideas about our freedom fighters and history to your kids.

  1. Names of a few freedom fighters.
  2. Stories of independence.
  3. Date of independence.
  4. Year of independence.

Along with studies your child should be involved in extracurricular activities. 

  1. Participate in groups and other activities.
  2. Communicate appropriately and politely with other students & teachers.
  3. Respect elders and behave politely with them.
  4. Raise their hand before interrupting.
  5. Eager to learn.
  1. Understand and follow simple directions.
  2. Listen to others without interrupting, or raise a hand if they want to speak.
  3. Recite poems and songs.
  4. Asks questions whenever required.
  5. Understand their mother tongue and one other language. (Hindi, English)
  6. Distinguish between formal & informal language.
